Paraguay as a family destination

More and more families with children are choosing Paraguay as a second home or permanent base. The country offers a safe environment, low cost of living, a functioning education system and a family-friendly social climate.

Schools and education

In Asunción there are a number of private and international schools following international curricula:

  • German schools: In Asunción and some other cities there are German-language schools and kindergartens offering bilingual education.
  • International schools: British and American schools with IB programmes are present in Asunción.
  • Public system: Free but of variable quality – usually not the first choice for German-speaking children.

Private school fees in Paraguay are well below European levels and manageable for expatriates on a moderate budget.

Integration and social environment

Paraguay has a long history of European immigration, especially from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There are well-established German-speaking communities, notably in the Fernheim colony in the Chaco and in Encarnación. This greatly facilitates integration and quickly gives newcomers a social network.

Safety for families

In the preferred residential areas of Asunción and other larger cities, safety for families is good. Gated communities and secured housing are common and affordable. With the right location, life in Paraguay is significantly safer than in many European cities.
