The first step: the journey to Paraguay
Anyone seriously considering Paraguay as a Plan B should get to know the country in person first. A well-prepared exploratory trip gives you a realistic picture of living conditions, climate and opportunities on the ground – and is the best basis for an informed decision.
Flights to Paraguay
The main airport is Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción (ASU). There are no direct flights from Europe. Typical connections go via Madrid (Iberia, Air Europa), São Paulo (Latam, Gol) or Miami (American Airlines). Travel time from Frankfurt: approx. 14–18 hours including layover.
Money-saving tips: Book early, compare routes via different South American hubs and look for good combinations with low-cost airlines for the second leg.
Accommodation for the first weeks
For the first period, a furnished short-term rental or serviced apartment in Asunción is recommended. Platforms like Airbnb or local property sites offer well-equipped apartments from 500–800 Euro per month. Those staying longer can find cheaper long-term options through local agents.
Tip: Book your first accommodation for at least two weeks in a central neighbourhood (e.g. Villa Morra, Las Mercedes or Recoleta) to explore the city and different areas before committing.
Getting around
A rental car is recommended for the first few weeks, especially if you want to explore different regions. International driver's licences are accepted in Paraguay. In the long term you will need a local driver's licence, which ParaguayJoker can help you apply for. Uber and taxis are widely available and affordable in Asunción.
Travel insurance
For the duration of your exploratory trip and the first months, international travel insurance with medical repatriation is strongly recommended. Only when you have taken out local health insurance in Paraguay can you do without it. ParaguayJoker advises you on suitable insurance options for your stay.
