Healthcare in Paraguay – a realistic overview
Quality of healthcare is a key concern for many expatriates. Paraguay has a two-tier system: a public system that is free but unreliable in quality, and a private sector with very good standards, especially in Asunción.
Private sector – international quality
In Asunción there are several private clinics with international standards, modern equipment and well-trained staff who have often studied abroad. Procedures and treatments are significantly cheaper than in Europe – with comparable or good quality.
Recommended private clinics in Asunción include Hospital Bautista, Centro Médico La Costa and Hospital Adventista, all offering a full range of specialties and emergency care.
Private health insurance in Paraguay
Private health insurance is strongly recommended for expatriates in Paraguay. Monthly premiums for adults range from about 80 to 200 Euro depending on age and plan. This is a fraction of the cost in Germany or Switzerland.
Particularities: Private insurers work with fixed contract partners – specific clinics and doctor networks. Benefits are often limited to a certain number of hospital days per year and to defined clinics and regions. Coverage is good in Asunción and larger cities; in rural areas the choice of contract partners may be smaller. Before signing, check which clinics and doctors are included and whether they match your location.
Local providers such as Mapfre, La Consolidada or Integramed offer comprehensive packages. ParaguayJoker recommends taking out insurance before moving and paying attention to coverage and hospital network.
Dentists and specialists
Dental and specialist care in Paraguay is of good quality and available at significantly lower prices than in Europe. Many Europeans use their stay in Paraguay for affordable dental work or routine check-ups.
